Citation :A common misconception is that the O.D green filters and brown "coffee can" filters contain asbestos; however, the use of asbestos in gas mask filters ended after WW2. None of the GP-5 filters were built before 1970, so it is impossible for them to contain asbestos. They do, however, contain activated charcoal, which might be inhaled by the wearer if the cotton seals inside the filter are damaged.
